‹‹ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ኢስላማዊ መንግሥት የመመሥረት ዓላማ አንግቦ የሚንቀሳቀስ ቡድን አለ›› የሚለው አባባል ለእኔ ትርጉም አልባ ነው፡፡ እውነት ነው ብዬ ለመቀበልም በጣም ይቸግረኛል፡፡ ይህን ከመሰለ የፈጠራ ወሬ የሚገኘው ፖለቲካዊ ትርፍ ምን እንደሆነም ፈጽሞ አልገባህ ብሎኛል፡፡ ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ኢስላማዊ መንግሥት ለመመሥረት የሚንቀሳቀስ ቡድን ካለ፣ ያንን ቡድን ከማንም በላይ እና በፊት አምርሮ የሚቃወም እና የሚያወግዘው ኢትዮጵያዊው ሙስሊም ነው፡፡

ዶ/ር ጀይላን ለአል ጀዚራ ቴሌቪዥን በአረብኛ ሲናገሩ፣ ‹‹የበርካታ ሃይማኖት ተከታዮች በሚገኙባት ኢትዮጵያን የመሰለች አገር ኢስላማዊ መንግሥትን ስለመመሥረት ማሰብ እብደት ነው›› ብለዋል፡፡ እኔን ጨምሮ አብዛኛው ኢትዮጵያዊ ሙስሊም ይህን አባባል በእጅጉ እንጋራለን፡፡… በ1960ዎቹ አጋማሽ ‹‹የሃይማኖት እኩልነት ይከበር!›› እያሉ በታላቅ ሕዝባዊ ሰልፍ የጮሁት ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች፣ በዘመነ ኢሕአዴግ፣ በኢፌዲሪ ሕገ መንግሥት ‹‹መንግሥት እና ሃይማኖት የተለያዩ ናቸው፤ መንግሥት በሃይማኖት ጉዳይ ጣልቃ አይገባም፤ ሃይማኖትም በመንግሥት ሥራ ላይ ጣልቃ አይገባም›› ተብሎ በይፋ ሲደነገግ ከማንም በላይ ጮቤ የረገጡ ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች፣ ዛሬ በዚህችው ኢትዮጵያ ኢስላማዊ መንግሥት የመመሥረት ዓላማ አንግበው ሊንቀሳቀሱ አይከጅሉም በእርግጥም ካላበዱ በስተቀር፡፡ አላበድንም! እደግመዋለሁኝ አላበድንም!!

ነገር ግን በአሁኑ ወቅት በአገራችን ኢትዮጵያ፣ እኛ ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞችን ክፉኛ ያስቆጣ፣ ክፉኛም ግራ ያጋባ አንድ ትልቅ ችግር ተፈጥሯል፡፡ በአሁኑ ሰአት ከችግሩ ጋር በቀጥታ እየተጋፈጥን ያለነው እኛው ሙስሊሞቹ ብቻ ብንሆንም ቅሉ፣ ችግሩ ግን ቆም ብሎ በሰከነ አዕምሮ የሚያስብ ማንኛውንም ኢትዮጵያዊ ዜጋ የሚመለከት፣ ሙስሊሙን ኅብረተሰብ ብቻ ሳይሆን እርሱንም ሊያስቆጣ የሚችል ወይም የሚገባው ነው ብለን እናምናለን፡፡ … ሙስሊም ያልሆነው ኢትዮጵያዊ ወገናችን የችግሩን ጥልቀት እና ክብደት ይረዳ ዘንድ ራሱን አንድ ጥያቄ ብቻ እንዲጠይቅ እንፈልጋለን ‹‹እንዲህ ዓይነት ነገር በእኔ ላይ ቢፈፀም ኖሮ አሜን ብዬ እቀበላለሁኝን?›› …

እኮ እንዴት ያለ ነገር?

ችግሩ በሙስሊሞች የተፈጠረም አይደለም፡፡ በሙስሊሞች መካከል የተፈጠረም አይደለም፡፡ እውነቱን በገደምዳሜ ሳይሆን በግልጽ ለመናገር ችግሩ የተፈጠረው በመንግሥት እና በመንግሥት አማካይነት ብቻ ነው፡፡ በጥቅሉ ሲነገር፣ የችግሩ መሠረታዊ መነሾ የኢሕአዴግ መራሹ መንግሥት ለማመን በሚያዳግት ድፍረት (incredible boldness) በሃይማኖት ጉዳይ ውስጥ ‹ጭው ብሎ መግባት› ነው፡፡ ‹ጭው ብሎ መግባት› የሚለውን አገላለጽ የተጠቀምሁት፣ መንግሥት በሃይማኖት ጉዳይ ጣልቃ መግባቱ አዲስ ስላልሆነ ነው፡፡ በሌሎች ሃይማኖቶች አኳያ ለመናገር ለጊዜው በቂ መረጃ ባይኖረኝም፣ ሙስሊሙን በተመለከተ ግን ቢያንስ ከ1987 ወዲህ የኢትዮጵያ እስልምና ጉዳዮች ጠቅላይ ም/ቤት ከኢሕአዴግ ቁጥጥር ውጪ ሆኖ አያውቅም፡፡ የጣልቃ አገባቡን ደረጃና መልክ ስናይ ግን የአሁኑ (በጥቅሉ ከ2000፣ በይፋ ደግሞ ከሐምሌ 2003 ወዲህ ያለው) እና የከዚህ ቀደሙ (ከ1987 – 2000) የሰማይና የምድር ያህል የተራራቁ ናቸው፡፡ ጣልቃ አገባቡ እንዳሁኑ ፍፁም ጀብደኝነት የተመላበት ሆኖ አያውቅም፡፡

እንዳልሁት ላለፉት 17 ዓመታት የኢትዮጵያ እስልምና ጉዳዮች ጠቅላይ ም/ቤት ከመንግሥት ቁጥጥር ውጭ ሆኖ አያውቅም፡፡ ሙስሊሙ ኅብረተሰብም አንድያ የሃይማኖት ተቋሙ ከፖለቲካ መሣርያነት ባለፈ የማኅበረሰቡን መንፈሳዊ ህይወት ለማበልፀግ የረባ ሥራ አለመሥራቱ ሲያሳዝነው ቆይቷል፡፡ እንዲያም ሆኖ ቢያንስ በኢፌዲሪ ሕገ መንግሥት የተረጋገጡ መብቶቹን በመጠቀም እምነቱን በነፃነት ለማራመድ፣ ለመተግበር እና ለማስተማር የሚያደርገው የግል እና የወል ጥረት ስላልተስተጓጎለበት ከተቋሙ ብዙም ሳይጠብቅ በሰላም ኑሯል፡፡

ከቅርብ ጊዜያት ወዲህ ግን የኢሕአዴግ መንግሥት አንዳችም የሙስሊሙን ማኅበረሰብ ይሁንታ እና እውቅና ሳይጠይቅ፣ በዚሁ እርሱ በሚቆጣጠረው ‹‹የሙስሊሙ ማኅበረሰብ ተቋም›› ላይ የ‹‹አሕባሽ›› አስተምህሮ አራማጆችን በመሾም፣ ይህንኑ አስተምህሮ በ‹አሕባሻዊው› ጠቅላይ ም/ቤት አስፈፃሚነት፣ በኢትዮጵያ ሙስሊም ኅብረተሰብ ውስጥ ለማስረፅ (ለመጫን ወይም ለማስጫን) በትጋት እየተንቀሳቀሰ ይገኛል፡፡ በሚሊዮኖች የምንቆጠረውን ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች በአሕባሽ አስተምህሮ የማጥመቅ ‹‹ተልዕኮ እና ሥልጣን›› የተሰጠው ‹‹አሕባሻዊው ጠቅላይ ም/ቤት›› ተልዕኮውን የሚፈጽመው የፌደራል ጉዳዮች ሚኒስቴር በሚያደርግለት ቀጥተኛ ድጋፍ እና የቅርብ ክትትል ነው፡፡

መንግሥት በሙስሊሙ ኅብረተሰብ ተቋም ላይ የ‹አሕባሽ› አስተምህሮ አራማጆችን የሾመው በ2000 ቢሆንም፣ ም/ቤቱ በአሕባሽ አስተምህሮ የማጥመቅ ዘመቻውን በይፋ የጀመረው በሐምሌ ወር 2003 ሐሮማያ ላይ ባካሄደው የመጀመርያ የሥልጠና ጉባዔ ነው፡፡ የኢትዮጵያ ሙስሊም ኅብረተሰብ ‹‹እንዴ! ምን እየተሠራ ነው?!›› ብሎ ማጉረምረም የጀመረውም ያኔ ነው፡፡ [በነገራችን ላይ ያንን ‹‹ታሪካዊ›› የሥልጠና ጉባዔ በንግግር የከፈቱት የፌደራል ጉዳዮች ሚኒስትሩ ዶ/ር ሺፈራው ነበሩ፡፡ ሥልጠናው በክቡር ሚኒስትሩ ንግግር መከፈቱ ግን ከየክልሉ ተጠርተው ሥልጠናውን ከታደሙ ወደ 1500 የሚጠጉ ሙስሊሞች፣ ከ500 የማያንሱት አቋርጠው ከመውጣት አላገዳቸውም፡፡ በነገራችን ላይ፣ ከሐሮማያው ሥልጠና በኋላም፣ አዲስ አበባ ውስጥ በተካሄዱ የ‹አሕባሽ› አጥምቆት ጉባዔዎች ላይ ሚኒስትሩ ‹‹ውድ ጊዜያቸውን ሰውተው›› የመክፈቻ ንግግር ከማድረጋቸውም በላይ ሥልጠናው ሲጠናቀቅም ለሠልጣኞች የምስክር ወረቀት ሰጥተዋል፡፡]

እርግጥ መንግሥት ‹‹በእነዚህ ሥልጠናዎች ላይ የምገኘው ለተሳታፊዎቹ በሕገ መንግሥቱ ዙርያ ግንዛቤ አስጨብጥ ዘንድ በጠቅላይ ምክር ቤቱ ስለተጠየቅሁ ነው›› ሲል ነግሮናል፡፡ ለሐሮማያው ሥልጠና ከየክልሉ ከተጠሩት ሙስሊሞች መካከል 500 ያህሉ ‹‹ሥልጠናውን›› አቋርጠው የወጡት፣ ‹‹ለምን ስለ ሕገ መንግሥት ግንዛቤ አስጨበጣችሁን?›› ብለው ነውን? አይደለም፡፡ ውሎ ሳያድር ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች ዳር እስከ ዳር ማጉረምረም የጀመሩትስ ‹‹ለምን ሕገ መንግሥቱ በሙስሊም ወንድሞቻችን ላይ እንዲሠርጽ ይደረጋል?›› ብለው ነውን? አይደለም! መላው የአገሪቱ ሕዝብ ስለ ኢፌዲሪ ሕገ መንግሥት ድንጋጌዎች ጠለቅ ያለ ግንዛቤ ቢጨብጥ፣ ሙስሊሞች ይደሰቱ እንደሁ እንጂ የሚያጉረመርሙበት ምክንያት አይኖርም፡፡ ከሕዝቡ ግንዛቤ መጨበጥ የበለጠ ግን ሙስሊሞችን ጨምሮ መላው ኢትዮጵያውያን ከልብ የሚደሰቱት መንግሥት ሕገ መንግሥቱን አክብሮ ቢያስከብር ነበር፡፡ ካለፉት በርካታ ወራት ጀምሮ ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች ያለማቋረጥ እያጉረመረሙ ያሉትም ይህ ባለመሆኑ ነው መንግሥት ሕገ መንግሥቱን በመጣሱ!

መንግሥት ከ1950ዎቹ ወዲህ በሊባኖስ ምድር በተቋቋመ ‹‹አሶሴሽን ኦፍ ኢስላሚክ ቻሪቲስ›› (AICP) የሚባል የበጎ አድራጎት ድርጅት አማካይነት እየተሰበከ የሚገኘውን የ‹‹አሕባሽ›› አስተምህሮ ‹‹ነባሩ እስልምና›› ብሎ በማንቆለጳጰስ፣ ‹አሕባሻዊው› ጠቅላይ ም/ቤት ሙስሊሙን ኅብረተሰብ በአሕባሽ አስተምህሮ ለማጥመቅ ለሚያካሂደው ዘመቻ በቀጥታም በሉት በተዘዋዋሪ ይሁንታውን ችሯል፡፡ በአንጻሩ መላው የኢትዮጵያ ሙስሊም ኅብረተሰብ ‹‹ሱፊዩም›› ሆነ ‹‹ሰለፊዩ›› ተቋማችን የ‹‹አህባሽ›› አስተምህሮ ማስፋፊያ ሊደረግ አይገባም፡፡ ማንኛውም ኢትዮጵያዊ ዜጋ የ‹‹አሕባሽ››ን አስተምህሮ የመቀበል፣ የመተግበር እና የማስተማር ሕገ መንግሥታዊ መብት አለው፡፡ ነገር ግን የእኛ ተቋም ለ‹‹አሕባሽ›› አስተምህሮ አራማጆች ተላልፎ ሊሰጥ አይገባም፡፡ ፈጽሞ ያልመረጥናቸው የ‹‹አሕባሽ›› አስተምህሮ አራማጆች ተቋማችንን ሊቆጣጠሩ፣ እምነታቸውንም በሰፊው ሙስሊም ሕዝብ ላይ ሊጭኑ አይችሉም፡፡ የመጅሊሳችንን መሪዎች የመምረጥ መብታችን ይከበር! እያሉ ‹‹ለመንግሥት ባልተመቸ›› እጅግ ሰላማዊ መንገድ እየጮሁ ነው፡፡

ኢትዮጵያዊው ሙስሊም ለ‹‹ወዮልህ!›› ዛቻ እና ማስፈራሪያ በርግጎ፣ ‹‹አክራሪ›› እና ‹‹አሸባሪ›› በሚሉ ቅጥያዎች ተሸማቆ ይህን ከመሠረታዊ የእምነቱ ጉዳይ ጋር የሚገናኝ ጥያቄ እርግፍ አድርጎ ይተዋል ተብሎ ይታሰባልን? ይህንን ጉዳይ አለቅጥ ለጥጦ በኢትዮጵያ ምድር ኢስላማዊ መንግሥት ከመመሥረት ጋር ማያያዝስ ምን ይጠቅማል? የትስ ያደርሳል? ይህንን የሙስሊሙ ሕዝብ ጥያቄ ተገቢነት ለመረዳት የግድ ሙስሊም መሆን አያስፈልግም፡፡ ‹‹እንዲህ ዓይነት ነገር በእኔ ላይ ቢፈፀም ኖሮ አሜን ብዬ እቀበላለሁኝን?›› ብሎ ራስን መጠየቅ በቂ ነው፡፡

እስካሁን ከታየው ሁኔታ በመነሳት መንግሥት የሙስሊሙን ሕዝብ ጥያቄዎች ለማስተናገድ የመረጠው አካሄድ ለችግሩ እልባት የሚያስገኝ አይመስለኝም፡፡

በፕሮፓጋንዳው መስክ እየተሠራ ያለው ነገር ደግሞ እጅግ አሳፋሪ እና ፍፁም ኃላፊነት የጎደለው እንደሆነ በግልጽ እየታየ ነው፡፡ በአገር ውስጥም ሆነ በባህር ማዶ የሚኖሩ በሚሊዮኖች የሚቆጠሩ ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች በአንድ ድምጽ እየጮሁበት ያሉትን ግልጽ የሕዝብ ጥያቄ ‹‹የጥቂት ስውር ዓላማ ያላቸው ግለሰቦች›› አድርጎ ለማጣጣል መሞከር ነገሮችን ያካርር እንደሁ እንጂ ከቶውንም አያለዝብም፡፡ መንግሥት በሚቆጣጠራቸው የህትመትና የኤሌክትሮኒክ ሚዲያዎች ላይ የሚሠሩ ጋዜጠኞች፣ ‹‹በዚህ እና በዚያ አቅጣጫ ፃፉ›› ስለተባሉ ብቻ፣ ጠለቅ ብለው በማያውቁት፣ ሥራዬ ብለውም ባልተከታተሉት ጉዳይ ላይ ጨርተው ጨርተው እላቂያቸው የቀረ ውል የለሽ ቃላትን በመደረት ኃላፊነት በጎደለው ተግባር ላይ ባይተጉ መልካም ነው፡፡ መንግሥት የያዘው አቋም አደገኛ ይመስለኛል፡፡ ይህንን አደገኛ አቋም በማራገብ እና በመለጠጥ ነገሮችን ወዳልተፈለገ አቅጣጫ መምራት ለአገራችን ሰላም አያመጣም፤ ልማትን አያፋጥንም፤ ዴሞክራሲን አያጎለብትም፡፡ የሕዝብን ድምጽ መስማት፣ ለሕዝብ ጥያቄም ተገቢውን ምላሽ መስጠት ነው የሚጠቅመው፡፡ ሕዝብን መናቅ ማንንም የትም አያደርስም፡፡

መነሻዬ ላይ ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች ካላበዱ በቀር በኢትዮጵያ ኢስላማዊ መንግሥት ስለመመሥረት ሊያስቡ አይችሉም ማለቴን ታወሰኝ፡፡ አሁን ጽሑፌን ልዘጋ ስል ደሞ ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች የማያደርጓቸው ሌሎች ሁለት ነጥቦች ትዝ አሉኝ፤ አንድያ ተቋማቸውን ‹‹አሕባሽ›› ለሚባል መጤ አስተምህሮ አራማጆች አሳልፈው የሚሰጡ፣ የ‹አሕባሽ›ን አስተምህሮ በግድ እንጫንባችሁ ሲሏቸውም ‹በጄ› የሚሉ አይመስለኝም በእርግጥም ካላበዱ በስተቀር! እኔ እስከሚገባኝ ድረስ ኢትዮጵያውያን ሙስሊሞች አላበዱም፡፡

It has discussed several national issues in the three days meeting. የአፋር የሰብአዊ መብቶች ድርጅት፣ የኢትዮጵያዊያን ኮሚውኒቲ በቤልጂየም እና የሉቅማን የኢትዮጵያዊያን-ቤልጂማዊያን ሙስሊሞች ማህበር በጥምረት ጥሪያችንን እናቀርባለን፤

ሰልፉ የሚካሄድበት ቀንና ሰአት፦ ሜይ 16፣ 2012 ከ13፡00 ሰዓት ጀምሮ

ሰልፉ የሚካሄድበት ቦታ፦ በብራስልስ አውሮፓ ካውንስል ፊት ለፊት

በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ያለው የሰብአዊ መብቶች አያያዝ ሁኔታ ከዕለት ወደ ዕለት አስከፊ ወደ ሆነ ደረጃ ላይ እየደረሰ ይገኛል። በግለሰቦች ላይ ከሚደርሰው የመሰወር፣ የጅምላ እስራት፣ በድብደባ ማሰቃየት፣ አፈና እና ግድያ፣ ከስራ መባረር፣ ንብረት መነጠቅ እና ሌሎች በደሎች… በተጨማሪ የተወሰኑ የሕብረተሰብ ክፍሎችን፣ የኃይማኖት ተቋማትን፣ የሙያና የሲቪክ ማኅበራትን፣ የሰብዓዊ መብቶች ድርጅቶችን እና የፖለቲካ ፓሪቲዎችን ዒላማ ያደረገ የጥቃት እርምጃ በተደጋጋሚ በመንግስት በኩል እየተወሰደ ይገኛል። እነዚህ የመብት ጥሰቶች መፍትሄ ሳይበጅላቸው ለረዥም ዘመናት ከቆዩት የፖለቲካ፣ የኢኮኖሚና ማሕበራዊ ቀውሶች ጋር ተዳምሮ አገሪቱን እጅግ አስፈሪ ወደሆነ ሁኔታ እያመራት ይገኛል። ነገሮች ሙሉ በሙሉ ከመንግስት ቁጥጥር ስር ወጥተው አገሪቱ ማቆሚያ ወደ ሌለው ቀውስና እልቂት ውስጥ ከመግቧቷ በፊት የአለም አቀፉ ማኅበረሰቡ ተገቢውን ጫና በመንግስት ላይ ያደርግ ዘንድ ለማሳሰብ ይህን የተቃውሞ ሰልፍ አዘጋጅተናል። በዚህም መሰረት ለአለም አቀፉ ማኅበረሰቡ የምናቀርባቸው ነጥቦች መካከል የሚከተሉት ይገኙበታል።

1. መንግስት የተለያዩ ሰበቦችን በመፍጠር በአገሪቱ የተለያዩ ማጎሪያ ቤቶች ያሰራቸውን የፖለቲካ እስረኞች ባፋጣኝ እንዲፈታ፤

2. መንግስት ሽብርተኝነትን ለመዋጋት በሚል ሰበብ በሃሰት በአሸባሪነት ወንጅሎ ያሰራቸውን ጋዜጠኞች፣ የፖለቲካ ፓርቲ አመራሮችና አባላትን ባስቸኳይ እንዲፈታ፤

3. በአፋር ፣ በደቡብ፣ በጋምቤላ እና በኒሻንጉል ክልል ውስጥ ልማትን ለማስፋፋት በሚል ሽፋን ዜጎችን ከመኖሪያ ቀያቸው የማፈናቀል እርምጃ ባፋጣኝ እንዲቆም፤ የመንግስትን ሕገ ወጥ እርምጃ በመቃወማቸው የተነሳ ለእስር የተዳረጉ አርሶ አደሮች እና ሌሎች የአካባቢው ነዋሪዎች ባፋጣኝ እንዲፈቱ፤

April 27, 2012 has become another historical land mark in the History of Ethiopian Muslims. The security of the criminal regime in Ethiopia opened live ammunition on peaceful worshipers in Asasa, Arsi killing, wounding and arresting several of them. This is the first reaction to the months old, country wide peaceful demonstration that demanded full respect for the right of citizens as enshrined in the constitution. It is the first sign that the government is to implement what the head of the regime told the so called house of people's representative ten days earlier.

On April 17, 2012 Ato Meles Zenawi told Ethiopian Muslims that their demand is a act of terrorism that need to be crushed as soon as possible. He also told us that an Al Qaida cell is found in Arsi/Bale. Yes! in what happened in Asasa we see clearly what the PM was talking about. He signals where the action would begin and how. In the mean time Ethiopian Muslims are expressing their determination to go all the journey the struggle would take. The atrocities against their brothers would simply indicate that there is no other options but to pass through the holy lane the movement opened. Yes we grief the lose but their blood is shade for a supreme cause – their cause they died for will shine and their name will be glorified. They have fallen at a time and within the historical Movement for justice, freedom and peace for Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Those fallen are our Shahids and their killing we recoginised as one of the several crimes the regime perpetrated against the citizens of Ethiopia, Massacre. On April 27, 2012 the security forces of the government of Ethiopian opened fire on peaceful worshipers in Asasa town, Arsi Zone, Oromia region, killing and wounding several peaceful worshipers. Latest figure indicates that the number of people died has reached eleven. Among those killed is a six years old boy. Over fifty people were wounded, some still in serious conditions. Over 200 people are reported to have been arrested.

The Network of Ethiopian Muslims in Europe condemns this atrocity against peaceful citizens. We recognize the measure taken on April 27, 2012 against peaceful citizens of Asasa town as one of the several massacres committed by the regime and a crime against humanity. Those killed are martyrs (መስዋዕታ/Shahids) who gave their life for the sake of justice, freedom and liberty of Ethiopian Muslims and all Ethiopians.

The Network rejects with strongest terms the characterization by the government of Ethiopian of the incident in Asasa as “act of terrorism” and the people killed/wounded/arrested as “terrorists”. It is shameful that the government of Ethiopia choose to respond to the peaceful and constitutional demand of Ethiopian Muslims with gun.

For more than four months Ethiopian Muslims are demanding for an end to government intervention in their religious affairs and to stop its attempt to indoctrinate Ethiopian Muslims with an align Ahbash doctrine. Beyond the Awolia gathering, which has been attracting hundreds of thousands of Muslims, the Ethiopian Muslims at large is expressing its rejection of the Ahbashinization project of the Ethiopian government. Awolia-like gatherings are now a weekly phenomenon at most Mosques around the country. The gatherings demonstrated one of the highest standard of morality, integration and peace despite several attempts by the government security to disturb it. The demands are not other than the respect for the basic and fundamental rights of citizens as are guaranteed by the constitution of the country.

At this time of great tribulation and difficulty in our country, we call up on the Muslim community, both at home and in the diaspora, to unite more than ever and stand firm on the noble causes our brothers gave their life for.

We call upon all Ethiopians, regardless of their belief, to condemn this atrocity and join the movement for justice, rule of law and democracy in Ethiopia.

We fear that the measure taken in Asasa is an indication of what we may expect from the government in the days ahead. We call up human right organizations and the international community at large to condemn the measure taken, follow up developments and investigate the already committed crime against peaceful worshipers of Asasa.

We pray that Allah (swt) grant our dead Jennah ul-Firdous and make their blood the foundation of victory to Ethiopia and Ethiopians. May He, the Almighty – give their families patience. Amin.

STATEMENT OF PROTEST
 

The First Hijrah Foundation, strongly condemns the massacre that took place in the Asasa town of Arsi zone, Oromia region. The senseless killing of innocent worshipers in a mosque is an unforgivable crime. After the Friday prayer on April 27th, seven worshipers, among which were a six year old boy and a new mother of twins, were killed, and many others wounded by security forces.

We ask what was the crime committed by these victims?? They were but innocent Muslims, peacefully resisting the unconstitutional interference by the government in their religious affairs. We at the First Hijrah Foundation fear the latest incident in Asasa to be a prelude to what is soon to come. We fear that the government will use brutal force to silence the millions of Ethiopian Muslims that are rightfully and peacefully resisting the blatant interference of the government in their religious affairs by appointing leaders of the “Majlis”, or supreme Council of Islamic Affairs. Through this appointment of leaders, the government is trying to forcefully indoctrinate the Muslims with the well-known extremist Ahbash ideology mainly imported from Lebanon.

As we condemn these senseless criminal acts, we urge all peace loving Ethiopian and Human Right organizations to condemn and closely monitor the dire situation Ethiopian Muslims are going through. We demand a stop to the blatant violation of the constitutional rights of Ethiopian Muslims by the authorities in Ethiopia. We support and encourage Ethiopian Muslims to stay in the course of the peaceful struggle and resistance that they have chosen as a means to achieve their constitutional rights.

ADDIS ABABA – Police on Friday killed five protesters, including an elderly scholar, in Assasa town in central Ethiopia in the ongoing Ethiopian Muslim "anti-Ahbashism" protests that have spanned 13 weeks. In the Ethiopian capital on Friday, the major mosques of Addis Ababa and the streets were taken by a wave of protesters that chanted: “We want our rights! Stop Ahbashism campaign! Allahu Akbar!!”

The protestors strongly denounced the continued government interference in the religious affairs and said, “We must elect our religious leaders by ourselves. The current leaders of council of Islamic Affairs should be brought to justice for what they were doing on the Muslim society”. The Ahbashism campaign was aimed at enforcing the Muslims to accept the belief of a new sect called “Ahbash”.

Massive Protests

The number Muslims protesting against the government orchestrated Ahbashism campaign is increasing from time to time. The small protest started at “Aweliya Mosque” three months ago has spread beyond Addis Ababa and reached towns like Dessie, Dire Dawa, Harar, Shashemene, Assela, Gondar, Alaba, Baddessa, Assasa, Chagni etc. Haji Abdurahman Sadiq and Mr. Kemal Nuri, two community leaders living in Addis Ababa, say “All what you see is a result of a long time oppression of Ethiopian Muslims. The government proclaimed in its constitution that it has no right to intervene in our religious affairs. At start, it has allowed Muslims to preach freely, to publish Islamic books, to build Islamic schools etc. We were hopeful then and thought that we were beginning a new era. But as time elapsed, the government started to oppress our people brutally. We face a big bureaucratic challenge whenever we demand to build our mosques. Our children couldn’t express their faith freely in government owned colleges and universities. Muslim charity organizations are falsely accused of expanding ‘Wahhabism’ and closed down. The leadership of the Majlis didn’t say anything when these illegal measures were hurting the Muslim society,” pointing to the Higher Council of Islamic Affairs in Ethiopia.

All parts of the Muslim society, including women and children, have participated in the Friday protests. Viewers say the recent speech made by Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi had aggravated the tension between Ethiopian Muslims and the government. The rigid stance of the government was highly criticized by Muslim members of the ruling EPRDF party when they gathered for a training on religious tolerance and development. However, the government authorities said the critiques came from misconceptions and they launched more training programs in rural districts.

Five Muslims Killed in Assasa town, Arsi Province

Meanwhile, five Muslims are reportedly killed on Friday by Federal Police Security Forces in Assasa town in Arsi province of Oromiya regional state. The incident happened when the security forces surrounded a mosque and tried to arrest Sheikh Su’ud Aman, a well-respected Muslim scholar of the town on accusations of promoting terrorist ideology. When all people in the area opposed the arrest of Sheikh Su’ud, the securities opened fire and killed five people. Sources add that many others are wounded. An old man called Sheikh Kedir is among the dead.

The religious leaders of the town ask, “What wrong did we do? How dare they open fire in our mosque? Isn’t this disrespecting our faith? They killed five innocent civilians and wounded many others. Sheikh Su’ud was a well-respected scholar of our town. He was serving the community for many years and taught hundreds of people. Nobody can suspect him of teaching terrorism ideology. He only refused to participate on the training arranged by Ahbash faction in Shashemene town last week. That may be the reason for which he was accused as ‘teacher of terrorist ideology’”.

The tragic news has spread to the whole of the country and caused a huge rage. The leading religious scholars of Ethiopia are planning to meet Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to discuss a country-wide prosecution of Muslims.

In his recent speech to the Ethiopian Parliament, Meles was heard saying: “We caught an Al-Qaida cell in the provinces of Arsi and Bale. All of those whom we caught are adherents of Salafi School. This can justify that at least some Salfis of our country are promoting an Al-Qaida type ideology and work to topple the state by force. However, we can’t say all Ethiopian Salfis are members of Al-Qaida”.

However, many scholars and commentators say Meles fabricated this claim in order to silence the Muslims and all others who demand their right. They add, “Ethiopian Muslims have asked to only to give their right to elect the leadership of their Majlis and to stop imposing the ideology of the Ahbash on the mass. Nobody has asked a political power. No one was heard promoting an establishment of a state lead by Shari’a law. The government should stop terrorizing Muslims by bringing a nightmare of Al-Qaida to our country”.

Why Do Ethiopian Muslims Protest?

Witnesses says that the current protests are part of an ongoing resistance movement of Ethiopian Muslims who react against a plan of the government to indoctrinate them with the ideology of Ahbash faction. Founded by an Ethiopian born Lebanese scholar Sheikh Abdullah Al-Harari Al-Habashi in 1983, Ahbash preaches that the “Wahhabi” are non-Muslims and must be combated. Thus, the western nations see Ahbash as their friendly ally than the so called “Militant Wahhabi” school. The faction is represented by an organization called “Association of Islamic Charitable Project”. The Ethiopian origin of the founding scholar of the faction gave it the name “Ahbash” (the “Abyssinians”, derived from “Habasha”- the Arabic name of Ethiopia)

Ahbash claims to follow the Shafi’i school of law, one of the four canonically accepted schools in Sunni Islam. It sees itself as the propagator of the true creed of “Ahlu Sunna” (Sunni Islam) which was canonized according to the teaching of Imam Abul Hassan Al-Ash’ari (9-10th Century). However, the claim of Ahbash was rejected by well-known Islamic institutions including Al-Azhar University, the most celebrated school in the Sunni world. Further, both Sunni and Shi’a religious leaders have warned against Ahbash mainly due to its “takfir” (apostasy) edicts and extreme alliance with the West.

The Ethiopian government put the “Majlis” (Higher Council of Islamic Affairs) under the leadership of Ahbash scholars three years ago. In July 2011, the two parties together started a massive campaign of training and promoting the Ahbash ideology through government-owned media. To lead the trainings, more than 200 Ahbash scholars were brought from Beirut, Lebanon, where the headquarter of the faction was located. The campaign was called “Ahbashism” by the mass of Ethiopian Muslims. Some of the trainees say that the Ahbash scholars have went to an extent of ordering them to submit to Islam in a new form. The trainees add the Ahbash scholars was justifying that practice by saying “Since the beliefs of Ethiopian Muslims was being spoiled by “Wahhabi ideology” in the last three decades, it is too hard for them to say ‘I am a Muslim’ unless they reject Wahhabism”.

Haji Abdurahman and Mr. Nuri, the aforementioned community leaders, say “Beginning from the heartbreaking repression measure taken on Muslims in 1995 when they denounced a pro-government Majlis leadership of that time, we were enduring high oppression. But we faced the ugliest of all oppressions in this year. We are asked to accept the beliefs of Ahbash or face prosecution. Our imams are being arrested for refusing to accept the Ahbash ideology. The problem is very serious in rural areas where the media can’t reach. The government has already broken the rule of the law”.

The claim of these community leaders is supported by many viewers. They say that the government has gone against the constitution of the country by favoring one faction and alienating the majority. They add also that both Ethiopian Muslims and Christians have never been accused of religious extremism although the successive governments were highly oppressing the Muslims. This view is rejected by Dr. Shiferaw Teklemariam, the Ethiopian Minister for Federal Affairs, who recently spoke in government owned TV and Radio that all those who accuse the government of oppressing Muslims are the “Wahhabis” who have no tolerance to live with the Sufi Muslims and Christians. He said “We support the Majlis while it was training Muslim scholars on the constitution of the country. We work together with Majlis to eradicate religious extremism from the country. But that doesn’t mean interference in religions.”

Haji Abdurahman and Mr. Nuri say the government’s claim is false. They say “This is their usual propaganda. None of us opposes the government if it were truly seeking to teach about the constitution. It was the Minister of the Federal Affairs who officially inaugurated the Ahbashism campaign nine months ago. He said on the spot that the government has allocated over 11,000,000 Ethiopian Birr in support of the campaign. In all of his media appearances, he praises the Ahbash philosophy and condemns the ‘Wahhabi’ ideology. In one of the stages, he told us that the government officially recorded ‘Wahhabiya’ as an extremist sect and works to eradicate it from the country. Few years ago, they were terrifying us in the name of Khawarija. Now they echo about ‘Wahhabiyya”.

The Future Way

Many Ethiopian Muslim scholars say the government is taking the country to a very troublesome situation. “The Ahbash faction”, they explain “is a well-known extremist group in the Muslim world. There is no peace where this deviant sect has reached. Its pro-west stance doesn’t mean it can tolerate other religious groups. In addition to its deviance, it teaches that stealing and looting of the properties of non-Muslims are lawful practices. If it is left on the leadership of the Majlis, we fear it may create a big tension between Ethiopian Christian and Muslim peoples. We ask the government to hear our voice urgently”.

The Muslim scholars’ fear is also shared by many political commentators who say “The government of EPRDF has planned to leap the country to a developed nation. But it can’t go too far by neglecting the voice of the mass. Religious extremism has never been the problem of our country. It is only some shortsighted advisers of the government who proposed the importation of a controversial faction of Ahbash to combat what they called ‘Wahhabism’. So it is highly essential for the government if it thinks for a while and revises its ill planned Ahbashism Campaign”.

አዎ! የዘረኛውና አምባገነኑ የወያኔ ቡድን በወገኖቻችን ላይ እየፈጸመ ያለውን በደልና ስቃይ የእንግልቱ ሰለባ የሆኑት ኢትዮጵያዊያን በእየዕለቱ ከሚያሰሙን የድረሱልኝ ጥሪ በተጨማሪ የተለያዩ ዓለም አቀፍ ሚዲያዎችም ይህንኑ የወገን ያለህ ጥሪ እየዘገቡት ይገኛሉ። ይህ የህዝባችን ሲቃ እንዲያበቃ ደግሞ ዛሬ ልናደርግ ከሚገባን በርካታ ተግባራት መካከል በተባበረ ድምፅ ስቃዩና ማፈናቀሉ በኢትዮጵያውያኑ ላይ በአስቸኳይ እንዲቆም ተባብረን የቁጣ ድምጻችንን ለዓለም አቀፉ ህብረተሰብ ማሰማት አንዱ ጉዳያችን ነው ብለን እናምናለን። ስለዚህም የአገዛዙ ደጋፊዎችና ቀለብ ሠፋሪዎች የሆኑ መንግስታት ለወያኔ እየሰጡት ባለው ድጋፍ በህዝባችን ላይ ምን እየተፈጸመ መሆኑን እንዲገነዘቡት ለማድረግና ተቃውሞአችንንም ለመግለጽ፣ ለየተወካዮቻቸውም ማስረዳት አስፈላጊ ስለሆነ የመጀመሪያውን የተቃውሞ ድምፃችንን በዓለም አቀፍ ደረጃ ልናሰማ ቀጠሮ ይዘናል። ዋሽንግተንም በአሜሪካ የውጭ ጉዳይ ቢሮ /ስቴት ዲፓርትመንት / በር ላይ ተቃውሟችንን እናደርጋለን።

  በተመሳሳይ ጥቃት ከ 70 000 በላይ የጋምቤላ ነዋሪዎች ተፈናቅለው መሬታቸው ለሳውዲ ቱጃሮች የመሸጡን ተግባር ለማውገዝና ማፈናቀሉ ዛሬም ቀጥሎ በአፋር ህዝብ ላይ ያለው አዲስ ማፈናቀል በአስቸኳይ ቆሞ ነዋሪው ህዝብ ዋስትና እንዲያገኝ ለመጠየቅ፣

  የእስልምና ሃይማኖት ተከታይ ወገኖቻችን የራሴ የሚሉትን እምነታቸውን በሰላም እንዳያራምዱ፣ ይልቁንም መጤ ሃይማኖትን ያለፈቃዳቸው እንዲቀበሉ በአገዛዙ በተፈጠረባቸው ጫና እየተሰቃዩ መሆናቸውን ማጋለጥና ድርጊቱም እንዲቆም ለመጠየቅ፣

  በህዝባችን ላይ በአጠቃላይ እየተፈጸመ ያለውን ህገ ወጥ የመሬት ነጠቃ፣ የዘረፋ ሊዝ ፖሊሲና ኢትዮጵያን ለባዳን ኢንቬስተሮች የመቸብቸቡ ጉዳይ በአስቸኳይ እንዲቆም ለመጠየቅ፣
• 
  ቁጥራቸው ከ35 ሺህ በላይ የሚሆኑት በወያኔ እሥር ቤቶች የሚማቅቁት ኢትዮጵያዊያንን ዓለም እንዲታደጋቸው ለማስገንዘብ፣ እና
  
• በየሃገራቱ ያለውን ኢትዮጵያዊ ስደተኞችን የማንገላታት ሁኔታ በአስቸኳይ እንዲቆም ለመጠየቅ ተዘጋጅተናል።

Muslims accuse the Ahbash of launching an "indoctrination program" in predominantly Muslim areas

CAIRO – Hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian Muslims have taken to the streets to protest the government's oppression on their community and interference in their religious affairs.

"This is the first time I see Ethiopian Muslims united against their common enemy," Temam Mohammed, one of the protestors, told OnIslam.net.

"The ‘Majlis’ leaders thought they can impose their evil policy on us by using force," he said, referring to the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs.

Thousands of Muslims protested across the capital Addis Ababa following the Friday prayers to protest the government oppression of their community.

Chanting "We want our rights" and Allahu Akbar (God is Greatest), the protestors condemn government restrictions on their community.

Protestors say the government is spearheading a campaign in collaboration with the Majlis to indoctrinate Muslims with the ideology of a sect called "Ahbash".

The government of Ethiopian Premier Meles Zenawi has put the Ahbas in charge of the religious affairs of Ethiopia's Muslims.

Muslims say the government move was in violation of the constitution, which prevents the government interference in religious affairs.

Muslims also accuse the Ahbash of launching an "indoctrination program" in predominantly Muslim areas, forcing people to attend "religious training" camps or risk police interrogation and possible arrest.

"They thought they can draw a line between “Sufi” and “Salafi” and fulfill the interest of Ahbash which is a deviant business motivated sect seeking to expand its empire by dividing the people," Mohammed said.

"But we were fast enough to know their hidden agenda and strengthened the brotherly bond among the Muslim society. That is why you see this large mass coming here to demand its right."

Founded by Ethiopian-Lebanese scholar Sheikh Abdullah al-Harari, Ahbash is seen by the West as a "friendly alternative" to Wahabi ideology, which the West sees as extreme and militant.

Muslims say Ahbash imams are being brought over from Lebanon to fill the Majlis and teach Ethiopians that “Wahabis” are non-Muslims.

Silenced Muslims

The government, however, insists it was not interfering in the religious affairs of Ethiopian Muslims.

"We have no right to intervene in the churches and mosques," Premier Zenai told the parliament last week.

"We didn’t impose Ahbash ideology on the mass. All what is happening is done by the leaders of Islamic Affairs council themselves.

"What we did was only teaching about our constitution. We did that because it was our duty," he said.

Zenawi also defended mass arrests of Muslims, saying it was part of efforts to combat extremism in the country.

"All those arrested by the security agents are part of the ‘Salafi’ school which approves that at least some ‘Salafis’ want to topple the state forcefully," he said.

"We know them and we follow up them. However, this doesn’t mean all Salafis are Al-Qaeda members."

But Muslim religious leaders see Zenawi's statements as a tactic to silence them.

"Our request is purely about freedom of religion. We didn’t ask political power," Muslim scholars said.

"He didn’t address any one of the three points we requested. But he tried to show us his wisdom about “Sufi” and “Salafi” and terrorized us by bringing a nightmare of ‘Al-Qaeda’ to our country. He did so because he wants to keep us away from raising similar questions in the future."
