Islamic Research and Cultural Center (IRCC) has successfully accomplished its 3rd Mufti Dawd award ceremony in August 19, 2007 at Ambassador Theatre hall. Two research papers were presented to the audience exquisitely out of three award winning works thereby stimulating further dialogue amongst the auditorium.

The Islamic concept of criminal liability vis a vis the secular ideals has been explored by Yedsdes, the winner, with special emphasis on legal comparative history. The superiority of Islamic ideals was exhibited through out the presentation exemplified with historical incidents.

On the other hand, Abdulatif, who placed 3rd, systematically dealt with the defilation of sacrosanct objects. Above all, Ethiopia’s constitution provision towards the perpetrators of profanity was discussed in great detail smacking of the dangerous repercussion that would escort the ignorance of sacrilege. Conversely, Abdulatif argues, the courage to bring the culprit before trial after introducing law, with minimal loophole, coupled with impartial and proper implementation might help to avoid civil strife, religious conflict as much it would promote social harmony and national cohesion.

In addition the research center has presented unique paper that shed colorful light upon a renowned ancient mosque. The presenter clearly described the establishment and historical place of Goezi, believed to be built almost 1250 years ago, on top of its considerable landmark for the entire Ethiopian in general and for Muslims in particular as heritage as well as tourist destination. Clarion call was voiced to salvage the venerable mosque from ostensibly inevitable destruction.

The spectators expressed their relish, over and above their good gesture to support and provide any necessary service to the Muslim community and IRCC alike.

IRCC was established in December 2003 as an indigenous, non-governmental, non-profit and research organization sited in Ethiopia Committed to promote and advance Islamic thought, inter-religious dialogue and Ethiopian Muslim’s history through research and conference. IRCC annually organizes research contest amongst graduate students on Islamic issues and matters concerning Muslim’s conferring the Mufti Dawd award to the winners. More than 130 senior essays are performed including these year apart from 15 MA theses.

Pray to Allah, Dutch bishop suggests

Posted on August 20th, 2007 in General, News, Religion by negashi

Amsterdam, Aug. 14, 2007 (CWNews.com) - A Dutch Catholic bishop has suggested that Christians should refer to God as “Allah” to promote better relations with Muslims.

Bishop Martinus “Tiny” Muskens of Breda told the “Network” television show that “God doesn’t really care how we address Him.”

Pointing out that “Allah” is a term already used by Christians who speak Arabic, Bishop Muskens said that humans are needlessly divided over such terminology. God, the bishop said, is above such “bickering.”

The Dutch bishop admitted that his suggestion was not likely to gain widespread acceptance. But he predicted that within a century or two, Dutch Catholics would be addressing prayers to “Allah.”

Bishop Muskens has a history of creating occasional controversy within the Church. He has broken with Vatican leadership to endorse the use of condoms as a means of preventing the spread of AIDS, and in 2006 he traveled to Uganda to endorse the work of a group called Stop AIDS Now, which emphasized condom distribution.
