Setting Your Goal in Life

Posted on April 30th, 2009 in General by negashi

An excerpt from a speech by Amr Khaled

Goal without effort = dreams.
Efforts without goals = waste of time.
Goal + effort = you can change the world.

I will start by asking you, what is your goal?

Asking what your goal in life is a heavy and difficult topic. If you had a goal in life, it would have pushed you to be a perfectionist in your job, and give you a sense of responsibility. If you have a goal, you will be serious and will save you time.

I ask you brothers and sisters again, what is your goal? Let us talk in more details.

I swear by Allah (SWT), that we are not meant to live without a goal, and you cannot let life lead you. There are, as you know, thousands, no, millions of Muslims who come to this life only to eat, drink, marry, have children and die! You could not have been created for only that. I swear by Allah (SWT), I wish I can shout it out to every person, regardless of anything else; you have to have a goal. You are a human being. Do you know the definition of a human being? Do you know the difference between you and other creatures? Other creatures live for their day, they live only to eat, drink and reproduce! The main difference between you, a human being, and other creatures is that you have a dimension because you have a brain and you can develop a plan for your future. Please prove your humanity by having a goal! Brothers and sisters, I am using very polite words when I say ‘other creatures.’ What distinguishes you from anything else is that you have a goal that you want to achieve, while other creatures live for their day only. Never live in this world just to eat, drink, marry, have children and then die. With only that, the life story of a human being ends!

I will tell you the life story of a very young man who went to school because his parents asked him to. He continued until he reached the final year in the secondary stage. His parents told him to study hard and to get high grades so that he can enroll into a proper college. He studied very hard, finished secondary school, and the results came out. They told him that his scores qualify him for a certain college. He applied and enrolled in that college until the final year. They told him then that he should try to graduate with high honors in order to be able to work in a decent company. He did his best in studying and then he graduated. They told him that his scores allowed him to work for a certain company, so he joined it. Later, he said he wanted to get married. When they asked him who he wanted to marry, he replied, “Just a good wife whom I would like.” He married and then had children. He continued to work to get enough money for his children. Then he died. End of the story! Is not that the story of so many people? He came and went and that was that. What did he add to life? What did he do? What was his role? What were his goals? What did he plan?

Muslims students are appealing to the bigger community to trace the whereabout those two and the rest of those who have been taken by the security to undisclosed location. They fear that those brothers would be tortured and subjected to inhumane treatments. Negashi OJ will do its best to follow the case and bring to you the latest.

Temper Emotions and Act Strategically - Commentary on the Recent Univ. Clashes

F. Abamella

Brothers and Sisters,

Let us be clear on the recent University clashes. Ethiopia is a country where religious tolerance is not known except in the 7th century and a little bit during the reign of Emperor Fasiladas. Portraying this country as a model for tolerance is a myth created by people who does not differentiate between tolerance and subjugation. Muslims have been subjugated for centuries and in most of the cases especially after the reign of Minilik II, we have gradually surrendered all our identity and personality.

Ethiopia is a country that does not know logic and reasoning. This explains, at least in part, why it is poor and backward. Thus, as Ethiopian Muslims we have to know the mentality and behaviour of the non-Muslim Ethiopians. Do not fool your selves. Temper emotions and plan strategically. You have to differetiate what to compromise and what NOT. The issue of Niqab can not be negotiated easily. Talk about Hijab. Do not tell me Niqab is wajib. It is controvertial even within us, and the majority position can not support your view. With such position you can not talk to the non-Muslim and demand them to respect the right for Niqab. Muslim students should not be showy. It is not important because you are in an environment dominated by non Muslims.

The government should know that secular extremism will, definitly, create a religious extremism. Issuing an illegal law, then demanding to respect that law in the name of security and constitution is an act of injustice.

University acadamics in leadership should have some sympathy towards their Muslim students, if they are really Ethiopians and wory about the country. They are no one to talk ill of the government, but they are the most undemocratic sections of the society. I do not think students under them will learn respectable co-existence. Let us understand each other. We are tired of reading such a pity issue from our Universities. Leave the students learn with their choice of culture. Who are you to dictate to my sisters and brothers what to wear and not. You are damaging not only religious right but also a basic individual freedom. I expect to hear from our universities some scientific breaking news, not a dress or prayer code.

My sisters and brothers must also be careful not to disturb the teaching and learning process in the name of religion. Let us understand each other. Weigh each and every of your actions against the goal you wish to reach and understand its implications not only to the like of you but to those who oppose you.

Salam

The latest information Negashi OJ managed to obtain indicates that the number of students arrested during the protest against discrimination of students and against measures that force them to compromise on their right to belief and education was 1054. Moste are immediately released after police gathered all personal information about each of then, including fingure print and photo, and reprimanded them never to dare to participate in such action. However about  40 students - amirs, imams of different campuses and prominent and active students were taken to “Sostegna Police Tabia”near Semen Hotel in the capital. They are to be charged and appear before court on Monday, April 27, 2009. Police is still searching for more students including those who went to Federal Majlis last Monday to appeal to the leaders to heed of the students’ sufferings. Their name is also given to the respective campuses and the  university community is urged to report to police as soon as they appear there.

According to students who were arrested and released later, the number of students wounded by the brutal and notorous federal police was too many to attach a precise figure. It includes both male and female students and some are wounded very seriously.  Reporter of Al-Quds Newsletter was among those wounded, despite he showed them his ID, and sustained a broken  hand.
