An Islamic history is a vital part of Ethiopia’s richness

“Most non-Ethiopians, including the immediate neighbours of Ethiopia, also believe that Ethiopia is predominantly Christian. The more sophisticated might believe that there is a Muslim minority - and it was to learn about that population that drew me to Ethiopia in the first place. But it is not a minority. About 55 per cent of Ethiopia’s parliament is Muslim and representatives from the country’s Islamic community insist they are at least 50 per cent of the population. While the US State Department estimates that this number is a bit lower, Islam might actually be the religion with the most adherents in Ethiopia.”

“Most historical narratives portray Ethiopia’s as a Christian story. If Islam is even mentioned, it is associated with disconnected tribesman in the lowlands who battled Christian kingdoms in the highlands. But history is written by the powerful and now academics are rediscovering the Muslim history of this country of such noble heritage.”

 Dr. H A Hellyer

[The National] ‘We are sorry if you get woken up by the Muslim call to prayer in the morning.” Those were some of the first words I heard at my hotel when I arrived in Addis Ababa, on my first trip to Ethiopia. I confess - I was a bit confused. Call to prayer? In the capital of a “Christian country in a sea of Muslims”, as Ethiopia is sometimes called? Perhaps I was in a Muslim quarter of Addis Ababa that had been recently established?

[firsthijrah.com] As I spent my final night in my hotel room I began packing my stuff for the early morning journey back to my family. Suddenly, I was engulfed with emotions of sadness and tears started to overtake me. Earlier in the day, as I was talking to my daughter to let her know the time of my arrival, I got chocked up and was holding back my tears. I recognized this feeling was not new to me. For the last 11 years of gathering with my fellow Ethiopian Muslims, I repeatedly felt this feeling of sadness of separation. Even though I felt the distance from my family whom I missed dearly, the strong bond I felt with my brothers at the conference was overwhelming and unbreakable. My heart withered and became soft and this year, as was the case in prior years, I felt the anxiety and pain of separation.

Federal Majlis Denied any Wrong Doing

Posted on July 27th, 2009 in Analysis, General, News, Politics, Religion, Who-is-Who by negashi

The much anticipated interview of the President of the Ethoipian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (Alias Majlisel A’ala/Federal Majlis) is now online. Radio Negash conduct the interview and it was aired on its 26 July 2009 broadcast. The president was presented with various allegations and proven facts. He denied of any wrong doing on any issue (with regard to the Ulema unity Forum or what was reported from the recently held conference of Oromo Muslim Scholars and Leaders), claiming the leadership to be the legitimate representative of the Muslim Community, described the institution under his leadership as patron of Muslim unity and agent of peace and prosperity in the country.

Radio Negash -26 July 2009 Broadcast

Coloring the Majlis as done by the president might be harldy palatable for many who claimed to have experianced its “true nature” first hand. The Radio producers appreciate the contradiction that is being disclosed and thus decided to take the issue one step further hoping to establish comprehensive understanding on our affairs. As a means to arriving at that goal, they are proposing for holding a panel discussion where leading personalities with diverse opinions, visions and experiences put forward their thoughts on various issues that involve the Muslim umma in general and its institutions (religious as well as development) in particular.

Negashi OJ once again applauds RN and its producers for this distinguished proposal. It believes that such an opportunity, if implemented, would help create an atmophere of open discussion, a means that foster trust, understanding, tolerance/cooperation and mutual respect of different and even competing opinions. As much as it is such an important idea, the organisers need to gather diverse opinions and consult people with specific expertis in such area before jumping to executing the plan. In fact, the producers did not overlook these facts and rather seems to have given it special attention. They have already made a call for us, listners, to get involved and it is important that we answer them. Let us do it then .. not later but now. You can make use of the comment facility to repond.

First Ethiopian Muslims Community in Holland inaugurated

Posted on July 27th, 2009 in General, News, Religion, Who-is-Who by negashi

Ethiopian Muslims in Holland held yesterday an inaugural event on the establishment of the first Ethiopian Muslims Community-  (Senselet/?????) -  in the country. In the event held in the political capital of the country, the Hague, Ethiopian Muslims from various cities and towns showed up and made the event colorful. Members pleadged to work hard for the cause of the umma under the umbrella of their community. The name of the community means in Arabic “Habl” and is derived from the Quran (Q003:103) where Allah called upon Muslims to join together on the chain (Habl) revealed from Him (Laila ha Illa Allah) and affirm their unity.

It has been learnt that the community has been active at various levels for the past several years but lack a legally recognised organisation until the setting up of Senselet/?????. Members of the community have been working hard to fulfil the administrative requiremnets for their community to get recognized. Senselet/????? is now a legally registered Ethiopian Muslims organisation in the country with the mission to deliver a comprehensive service to the local communty and join the Muslims Community back at home in the frame work of development cooperation.

Congratulation for our brothers and sisters in Holland and May Allah bless their community - Senselet - Amen.

Posted on July 27th, 2009 in General, News, Religion, Who-is-Who by negashi

The four day Badr annual convention that stayed from 23 - 26 July 2009 and hosted by Ethiopian Muslims Association of Seattle (EMAS) ended yesterday.  The convention brought thousands from across the North American continent together; the turnout was not as big as some expected but not as bad as what others feared for period of sever economic crisis.

The promotion work for the convention depicted this years convention “uniquely organised” with a number of workshops and discussion panels that focused on topics that ranged from organisational priciples to the application of the various priciples of Islam to issues that are of relevance to Ethiopians and Ethiopian Muslims. How far the initial plan and hope are realised is yet to be analysed. In the mean time Negashi OJ is trying to get enough information and diverse opinions so as to make its own analysis. Stay tunned!

Deeds and Words - two different items for the Ethiopian Muslims Institution

Posted on July 20th, 2009 in Analysis, General, News, Opinion, Politics, Religion by negashi

Over few weeks ago Radio Negashi brought to air in two consecutive broadcasting (June 21 and 28 broadcasts) the voice of Ato Al-Muhammed Sirag, the General Secretary of the Muslims Institute - The Ethiopian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs known better as Majlis al- Aa’la. In that interview the Secretary described the institution and the leadership as “Servant of the Umma” that stands to promote unity and understanding, serve as umbrella to all surpassing minor differences and rather holding fast on the sole rope - La Illaha Illa Allah -  that is sufficient to bring Muslims together and affirm their unity and brotherhood. However, this word of the secretary was put in to an acid test when leading members of the institution demonstrated in a real time event what that unity and understanding means and how it should be achieved. Radio Negashi broght us this time a first hand evedence from among the participants on the event where the position the leaders of the institution was put on full display.  On its Media Review broadcasted on July 05, 2009, the radio presented a sensational review the events that took the attention of the Muslim community. The conference of Oromo Muslim Leaders and Scholars held in Addis Ababa and hosted by the Oromia Region Administration was one that received due attention. The transcription of the review was also posted on Negashi OJ. That review provoked interest in the wider audience; thus urging the producers to travel exta miles to unravel the truth;  producing at the end a a must to listen material. You may alternatively listen it here and continue reading what I have to say further.

Following the interview the Radio held with the General Secretary of the Majlis, many commentators urged the Muslim community, both at home and in the diaspora, to give the benefit of the doubt for the new leadership. This was in spite of their installment in the most dubious and obscured fashion and no one for sure can speak of what the real purpose of that much underground work while free and transparent procedure would be cheaper in all measures and yield a lasting and stable leadership as well as result in a productive institution. That material, corroborated with isolated discussions held with the some members of the institution, urged some organised communities and organisation in the diaspora to come to the open expressing their desire to work with the institution. How uninformed they were of the reality on the ground and how shallow the discussions were to unearth the real purpose of the leadership when these communities expressed such a desire? I hope this latest material will help them come to their sense and analyse objectively the effect of their decision before they take further steps. Any attempt to align oneself with one or another group in Ethiopia would not simply back-fire but would also have a long term repercussion.

I commend Radio Negashi for its being an objective voice of the otherwise voiceless community whose affairs are manipulated by diversified interest groups, and for its valuable material it provides its listeners with and for the leadership that runs it. Keep up the good work, guys!  We can not waiting to turn our ears to your radio once again and listen to your planned interview of the the Majlis President, the person that should be confronted with issues related to the running of the institution and for spoiling the the affairs of the over 40 million Ethiopian Muslims. Readers of Negash OJ may use the comment section of this entry to submit questions that they wish to be presented to the President. Negashi OJ will forward all timely submitted questions to the producers for their consideration.

This much I have said, dear readers. How about you? Lets know your analysis of the situation and the way forward for the Umma.

MONEY OUT OF NOTHING

Edited and supplemented by ‘here and now’

Today the initiates and frontmen for the “Babylonian Brotherhood” control world politics, banking, business, intelligence agencies, police, the military, education and the media. The most important of these, in terms of control, is banking. The creation and manipulation of money. The Brotherhood financial sting is very simple and spans the period we are documenting from the time of Sumer and Babylon to the present day. It is based on creating money that doesn’t exist and lending it to people and businesses in return for interest.
